Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young toddler. Ford was intrigued by the profession of acting in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she was not a fit. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She made her television debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate was also a regular performer in the theatre, and later joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
